BUSINESS URGED TO SAVE MONEY AND DONATE FOOD TO THOSE IN NEED

Wednesday, May 23, 2012
The NSW Government has launched a new toolkit to show businesses how they can donate food waste to charity.

The Member for Dubbo Troy Grant said the toolkit, which was launched in Sydney by NSW Environment Minister Robyn Parker and Founder of Do Something! Jon Dee, aims to reduce the estimated 400,000 tonnes of food wasted every year in NSW.

“Social research undertaken by the NSW Government shows that businesses are needlessly throwing away edible food because they think they’re not allowed to donate it to those in need and they are not sure what else to do with it,” Mr Grant said.

Mr Grant said the toolkit was designed to bring together businesses and food charities in a way that benefited both parties. “A new online Food Donation Tool Kit, supported by $13,750 funding from Love Food Hate Waste, is part of the Do Something! FoodWise campaign and gives food donation advice to restaurants, cafes, food markets, farmers, food manufacturers, food distributors, retailers and wholesalers,” Mr Grant said.

“There are many ways businesses can avoid food waste and dispose of food waste more wisely and this partnership project provides the knowledge to show business how.”

“With so many Australians going hungry, it’s a tragedy that companies waste so much food.
“This new toolkit and online resource will help to turn excess food into a resource that helps feed the hungry and save thousands of kilograms of food from being dumped as landfill each year.”
