The Member for Dubbo Troy Grant has thanked volunteers at the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) base in Dubbo today as part of National Volunteer Week which kicked off yesterday.

Mr Grant said all volunteers in the Dubbo electorate should be acknowledged this week for the time and energy they commit to a range of local activities.

"Volunteers are the backbone of our community and without their work many of our sporting clubs, organisations and services would not exist," said Mr Grant.

"By volunteering they are playing a significant role in the strengthening the local community."

This year Mr Grant chose to thank RFDS volunteers who graciously donate their time helping out at the base.
"Volunteers in Dubbo are tasked with a range of duties that include taking school groups and tourists on tours of the base, selling raffle tickets and assisting with fundraising events and open days," said Mr Grant.

"The Royal Flying Doctor Service counts on volunteers to minimise administration costs and ensure that more of the fundraising dollar goes directly towards providing health care for those of us who live in regional areas."

More than six million Australians are volunteers contributing 700 million hours of community service to many areas of society.

National Volunteer Week ends on Sunday May 20.
