FORBES HOSTS WORLD HANG GLIDING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Central West NSW town of Forbes is currently hosting the World’s best hang gliders as they compete in the 19TH FAI World Hang Gliding Class 1 Championship.

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Graham Annesley, today announced the NSW Government will provide a $20,000 grant from the Sport and Recreation Events Program to support this international event and the benefits it brings to communities in the central west of the state.

“Forbes is well-known by hang gliders for offering some of the most consistent hang gliding weather in the world,” Mr Annesley said.

“Australia has a track record of success in the sport of hang gliding and hosting the World Championship is a wonderful opportunity for our athletes.

“The Events Program awards grants to support sporting events in NSW with an international or national focus staged in regional or rural areas.

“Major sporting events also help to promote NSW tourism and support the local economy,” said Mr Annesley.

Troy Grant, local Member for Dubbo, said the influx of pilots, team members and spectators for the event provided a welcome economic injection for local businesses and the tourism sector in Forbes.

“Through this program, the NSW Liberal Nationals Government is helping local sports organisations stage world class, high level competitions in our backyard.

“This enables local athletes and officials to gain valuable experience on home soil while challenging themselves against world class competition,” Troy Grant added.
